If you’re searching for somewhere a little less trodden for your trip away this summer, Spain’s Toledo is a haven of all that is culturally diverse. Particularly for arts fans, Toledo is an overwhelming experience that has to be seen to be believed.
Just south of Spanish capital Madrid, Toledo was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in the 1980s thanks to the stunning architectural and monumental heritage dating back to the Spanish Empire. Toledo is famous for plenty of things, but its arts scene is rivalled by few.
Mixing an eclectic taste of old and new, local and national - as well as international - inspirations, Toledo’s arts and culture scene is both ancient and absorbing. Stepping into the Cathedral of Toledo can take you back hundreds of years to the 15th century where a remarkable use of lighting illuminates its interior and immerses visitors in wonder at the genius of its builders.
Even far into the past, Toledo has been known as a place of tolerance for the differences of others, which is why it is proud owner to some ancient religious monuments from Jewish and Muslim faiths as well as Christian - for example, the Synagogue of Santa María la Blanca and the church of San Sebastián, allowing visitors a glimpse into Toledo’s multi-cultural religious past.
If art for the sake of art is more your style, you’ll find a wealth of statues and monuments populating the city, though there is still much to be said for Toledo’s breathtaking buildings. The Alcazar, for instance, still has tourists flocking to Toledo every year to gaze upon the stone fortification - which was first used in the 3rd century before being restored in 1535.
For arts and museums, Toledo still has plenty to say. Having proudly been home to famed artist El Greco towards the end of his life, Toledo features heavily in many of his paintings, plenty of which can be seen at Toledo’s art galleries. You can also discover this gorgeous Spanish city’s more exotic past as a production centre for swords and weapons, remainders of which are on display at any of the city’s esteemed museums.
As a place that is a little bit different from other Spanish cities like Madrid and Barcelona, Toledo is unrivalled. And if you wish to find further information on the arts and museums available in the area then many of the hotels in Toledo should be able to offer some advice and guidance.
