Heidelberg is a city deep in the industrial heartland of Germany but very different from many of the cities that surround it. Many of which have grown up around industry over the years since the industrial revolution. Heidelberg on the other hand is a gentile city of learning nestled in the picturesque Neckar valley.

People have lived in this valley for eons and that was confirmed when in 1907 the jaw-bone of Heidelberg man was found with a carbon dated age of some five hundred thousand years. After the Roman Empire, Heidelberg survived the dark ages thanks to the foundation of a nearby Monastery.

As the twelfth century arrived Heidelberg emerged as an important city and home of what would become a group of influential electors and it is these people who are responsible for building its famous castle.

Started in 1386 Heidelberg Castle dominates the skyline of this ancient University City and is one of the most recognized castles in Germany. Built over the course of many years it has had a chequered history with many influential residents and visitors of note.

Destroyed on a number of occasions the final straw was in 1693 during the Orleans War and it was at this time the Heidelberg Electors finally abandoned the castle and eventually Heidelberg in favor of a nearby city Mannheim. If you like this beautiful place, you’d better visit there on your own. For more information about traveling; please have a look at http://www.affordable-cruises-tours.com.
